CHARGES TO
THE COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC COMPUTING
AND
TELECOMMUNICATIONS FOR FY-03

1.
Meet with the Provost and/or the Provost’s representative to
offer the Committee’s assistance on Academic Computing and Telecommunications
matters.
2.
Provide faculty, students, and staff input for the strategic
initiatives in the KU Information Technology Management and Budget Plan.
3.
Serve as a forum for discussing distance learning, online
instruction, intellectual property, and other issues relating to academic use
of information technology.
4.
Review current university policies related to information
technology (listed at http://www.ku.edu/~vcinfo/IT_policy/index.htm),
and provide recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for Information Services on
any changes or additions as needed.
5. Submit to
SenEx: a) the approved minutes of each meeting; b) recommendations approved by
the committee, and c) a final report by April 1, 2003. The final report should
outline the committee’s accomplishments and make recommendations for the
following year(s).

Continue to review the current organization for
faculty/staff/student off campus access accounts and encourage steps for improving
coordination/uniformity.
7.
Continue to review Exchange email services.
8.
Monitor, review, and make recommendations on all NTS
policies and practices including but not limited to; current funding structure,
implications of advanced activities that require multicasting-enabled
communications, topology of communications under the Internet 2 protocols, and
other NTS activities that impact The University of Kansas.
9.
Encourage the University to provide local computer support
in each building. The goal should be (1) to have at least one support person
per 100 desktop computers, and (2) to have each support person assigned to a
group of users (not dispatched from a pool). Review the recent survey of
current local computer support to determine how far we are from this goal.
10.
Insist on, and assist when appropriate, progress toward
obtaining email services for new hires promptly.
11.
Monitor the progress toward providing online computer
instruction for students, faculty, and staff.
12.
Provide input to IT management on policy and procedural
issues related to computer security on campus, including the need for a policy
on wireless access nodes.
13.
Recommend standards to insure that all campus technical
support personnel obtain an adequate level of training.
