CHARGES TO THE STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES FOR PROMOTION AND TENURE COMMITTEE
FOR FY-08

  • Contact FacEx chair, Rick Levy (rlevy@ku.edu) for further information or to schedule a meeting with FacEx to discuss recommendations for action on the charges.
  • Minutes of each meeting should be emailed to the governance office (govern@ku.edu) as soon as they are approved.  The minutes will be posted to the Governance web site.
  • A final report on the committee’s actions on each of the charges, as well as the committee’s recommendations for FY 09 charges and membership, should be emailed to the Governance Office (govern@ku.edu) by April 1, 2008.

STANDING CHARGES

1.  Review department and school criteria and procedures for promotion and tenure pursuant to section 6.3.5.1 of the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations for consistency with the requirements of Article VI of the rules and regulations, and approve criteria, guidelines and procedures that are consistent with those requirements.  Identify inconsistencies and provide feedback to departments, the College, schools, and other administrative units to correct problems.  Submit  issues that cannot be resolved to FacEx as provided in section 6.3.5,1 (ongoing).

2. Review guidelines and forms developed by the Provost and procedures developed by the UCPT pursuant to 6.3.5.2 for consistency with the requirements of Article VI of the rules and regulations, and identify problems or concerns.  Provide comments to the Provost and UCPT, and report issues that cannot be resolved to FacEx as provided in section 6.3.5.2 (ongoing).

3.  Promote and facilitate compliance with the standards and procedural requirements of Article VI of the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations by developing, maintaining, and disseminating guidance documents for departments, schools, and other administrative units.  Report to FacEx on the development of initial guidance documents by November 16, 2008.

4.  Communicate with the Provost’s Office and others officials involved in reviewing promotion and tenure criteria and procedures to coordinate the process of reviewing and providing feedback to departments, the College, schools and other administrative units.  Report any issues or problems to FacEx (ongoing).

SPECIFIC CHARGES
1.  Study the issues raised by the provision of proposed Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations section 6.5.3.1, which would require the committee conducting an initial promotion and tenure review to provide a summary of the outside evaluation letters to a candidate.  Consider whether the provision should be retained and whether there might be an alternative means of providing an opportunity for the candidate to respond to negative information in the promotion and tenure file before an initial decision.  Report recommendations to FacEx by November 18, 2007.

2. In connection with Standing Charge 3, work with the Task Force on Teaching and Learning to develop guidance documents for units concerning the evaluation of teaching for purposes of promotion and tenure.  Report to FacEx on the development of initial guidance documents by November 16, 2008.
 
3.  Monitor the implementation of the new Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations concerning Promotion and Tenure.  Identify issues and problems as they arise and report recommendations to FacEx as needed (ongoing).
