Other members of the Committee were Ben Burton, Student Executive Committee; Amy Devitt, English; David Ekerdt, Sociology; George Gibbs, Libraries; Liz Kowalchuk, Design; and James Owen, Law. Meetings were also attended by David Shulenburger, Provost; Lindy Eakin, Associate Provost; and Deborah Teeter, Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning.
The committee met just three times during the year, in November, December, and March. Most of the time at these meetings was taken up by discussion with the Provost about the State's budget situation and the proposed tuition increases.
Committee members attended some of the budget hearings held for the various units of the University. Unfortunately, we never got together afterwards to pool our findings.
The committee accomplished very little during the year, and I accept the blame for that. I cannot honestly say that we carried out any of the charges given us by Senex.
I had planned to retire a year ago, when I had my 70th birthday. However, the Planning Program lost two of its six full-time faculty, so I agreed to stay on for another year. The workload was much more than I anticipated, and I failed to do much that I had intended. I now plan to start phased retirement next year. I think it best that I not accept any more governance assignments.
