Approved by SenEx 6/24/04

Standing Charges

1.       Keep informed of the budgetary needs and priorities of the KU libraries, including acquisitions, salaries, staffing, space allocations, and accessibility of library materials. Obtain the counsel of the Library leadership regarding these matters.

2.       Monitor the functioning of the Library Appeals Board.

  1. Explore ways to promote effective use of library technology.

  1. Monitor the use of revenues generated by the library services fee.

5.       Submit to SenEx: a) the approved minutes of each meeting (minutes must be kept), b) recommendations for action as they are approved by the committee, and c) a final report by April 1, 2005.  The final report should make clear what was done (or not done) about each of the charges to the committee and make recommendations to SenEx for action.  The report should also provide the names of committee members and include suggestions for charges to, and the chair of, next year's committee.

Additional Charges

6.       Monitor the construction of the Books Records and Archives Deposit (BARD) and possible de-selection issues. Consider issues related to relegating holdings to permanent storage, to include:

a.       Defining and monitoring the procedures for deciding which volumes will be relegated to permanent storage, to include the issue of scholarly “browsing” in the vicinity of pertinent call numbers and entire runs of particular journals.

b.       Monitoring implementation of the significant archival activity in the Spahr library, and considering a satisfaction survey of affected faculty, staff and students to identify recommendations for similar future moves.

    1. Examining policies on preservation of materials that have been committed to electronic storage, to include relevant technologies and costs at peer institutions.

  1. Examine policies on space and acquisition of materials, to include consideration of mechanisms beyond Spencer’s limited endowment to procure significant available collections. Monitor and report on the current time it takes to catalog new acquisitions such that they are available to the KU community.

  1. Monitor availability of computer workstations in Watson and Anschutz, as without a card catalogue, access to the collections depends upon access to the computers.

  1. Coordinate with the faculty compensation committee to evaluate the issue of library professional salary inequities between KU and peer institutions, and the impacts of this on the quality of service to the KU community.
