INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

2009/2010 Academic Year Report

The Committee tackled two charges during this academic year.

1) Our first topic was the discussion of the report of the Ad-Hoc Committee on English Proficiency Requirements for Undergraduate Admissions.

Overall, our committee was convinced that the proposed policy is an improvement over the existing one, that it should help international students succeed academically at KU, allow students to better estimate the time and costs required for a KU degree, make our University admission policies consistent with peers and counter the perception that  KU is less competitive.  Several members voiced the opinion that in the long run it would be advisable to introduce a minimum English proficiency requirement for international students applying to KU, besides the currently used academic proficiency requirement. Several recommendations were made to clarify the policy.

2) Or second topic involved our own charges and constitution.

On the topic of multicultural affairs, the general concensus was that they should not fall under IAC consideration.

On the topic of Committee charges and constitution, we suggested that it would be useful to expand the charges and composition of IAC to reflect the current state of international programs on campus, in order to make it a more effective coordinating body.

I have attached meeting minutes with more detailed information

Sincerely
