FACULTY RIGHTS, PRIVILEGES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- (FRPR)
FINAL REPORT OF THE FRPR COMMITTEE FY2011
I am writing to you in my capacity as chair of the Faculty Rights, Privileges, and Responsibilities (FRPR) Committee. The FRPR Committee met regularly this year to address the standing and specific charges given to us by the Faculty Senate. (Please see the attached minutes of our meetings.) The committee discussed the first specific charge:
- Monitor implementation of the recommendations of the Chancellor’s Task Forces on Research Engagement, Admissions, and Retention and Graduation to determine how execution of the recommendations might impact the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of the KU faculty. Report concerns and recommendations to FacEx by March 1, 2011.
We decided that we should wait until the 2011-2012 school year to address this charge since the Chancellor’s and Provost’s specific Strategic Planning Initiatives had not been clearly delineated or implemented.
Therefore, the FRPR Committee members directed their attention to the second specific charge:
- Reconsider and rewrite revisions to the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, pending from FY 10, using the current Faculty Code of Conduct (in 1998 Faculty Handbook). This version of the Code is available in the Policy Library (https://documents.ku.edu/policies/provost/FacultyCode.htm).* (ongoing until final approval).
To address this charge, committee members first reviewed the University Senate Code, the University Senate Rules and Regulations, Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations, as well as the present Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct. Kathy Reed, with the help of Deb Teeter, Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, gathered materials regarding faculty rights, responsibilities, and conduct from a variety of universities; committee members reviewed these materials. After much discussion, the committee members decided to address the section of the Faculty Code that lists Faculty Rights (the present Article III). Attached are the proposed Faculty Rights that our committee would like FacEx to consider. The FRPR Committee will review the other sections of the Faculty Code at our May meeting and at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. Additionally, next year, we will work on Specific Charge #1.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With best regards,
Jan Sheldon
