FY-11 ACADEMIC POLICIES & PROCEDURES COMMITTEE
Approved by SenEx: 05/04/10; Revised 8/24/10
Approved by University Senate: 9/9/10
- For further information or to schedule a meeting with SenEx to discuss charges or the committee’s work, contact SenEx chair Ben Eggleston at eggleston@ku.edu.
- Please send minutes of each meeting to University Governance, at govern@ku.edu, for posting to the Governance web site.
- Please send recommendations for changes to the University Senate Code, the University Senate Rules and Regulations, and the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations as early in the academic year as possible. Because of the waiting periods involved in changes to these documents, recommendations proposed after spring break may remain pending the following fall semester.
- Please send a report of the committee’s actions on each of the charges, as well as any recommendations the committee wishes to make concerning charges or membership for the following academic year, to University Governance, at govern@ku.edu. Please submit the report by April 1, 2011. If the committee still expects to conduct business after April 1, please submit a report by April 1 and later submit any addenda that may be appropriate.
Standing charges:
1. Be prepared to respond to SenEx requests for reviews of academic-policy issues. (ongoing)
2. Monitor proposals for academic program restructuring and discontinuance, hold hearings, and follow other procedures in accordance with Article VIII of the University Senate Rules and Regulations. Report issues or recommendations for action to SenEx. (ongoing)
Specific charges:
1. Continue to review U.S.R.R. Article VII, Policy and Procedures Concerning Financial Exigency. (For more information concerning this charge, see the final report of the committee for 2009–10, p. 2, where the committee recommends re-examination of the policy in 2010–11.) Please report action on this charge to SenEx by 12/1/10.
2. Continue to review issues related to plus/minus grading. (For more information concerning this charge, including specific issues to consider, see the final report of the committee for 2009–10, p. 2, where the committee identifies several issues and recommends a charge for continued consideration of those issues.) Please report action on this charge to SenEx by 2/1/11.
3. Consider issues related to academic-misconduct charges and students’ withdrawing from courses in which such charges are pending. (For more information concerning this charge, see the final report of the committee for 2009–10, p. 3, where the committee recommends that this be a charge for 2010–11.) Please report action on this charge to SenEx by 3/1/11.
4. Consider whether U.S.R.R. section 2.2.8 should be amended to prevent students who have already graduated from retaking courses in order to raise their GPAs. (This issue arose in 2009–10.) Please report action on this charge to SenEx by 3/1/11.
5. Consider identifying academic policies that are in the F.S.R.R. and would more appropriately be placed in the U.S.R.R. (This can be done at your discretion—it is more a matter of tidying up the rules and regulations than solving any pressing problem.) Please report action on this charge to SenEx by 4/1/11.
